I don't like it either, but it's safe to say at this point that individuals, companies, and organizations aren't paying much attention to what their top level domain extensions were actually intended for. If TLDs as a whole were better regulated, it might not be a bad idea to have a domain extension specifically for adult... it's good advertising to potential customers and gives a pretty clear warning to sensitive viewers.
